Story behind the treasure: My Grandfather was apprenticed to Francis Carter as a letterpress printer in 1898. The apprenticeship was for seven years. I have his original apprenticeship deeds, part handwritten part printed on vellum. They list the stringent rules and regulations of his apprenticeship, including that he should not waste his master's goods nor lend them, not contract in matrimony, not play at cards or dice tables and not haunt taverns or playhouses. His wages are laid out to start at 5/6 per week rising to 13/6 per week in his final year. A real insight into the times
