Horseshoes for luck

Story behind the treasure: This pair of tarnished earrings is the only heirloom I have from my father’s family. My grandfather gave them to his mother to remind her of happier days. My great-grandmother was forced to leave her Wiltshire village after the death of her husband, as she could no longer survive in the harsh landscape of the agricultural south. She sent three daughters to relatives in America and then brought her other children to Manchester to find work. The earrings make me feel humbled that, less than half a century later, I was born into a world of opportunity and comfort.
