National Trust Treasure Forever competition

  1. This competition is open to all residents of the UK, except for employees of the National Trust, their families or anyone else associated with this competition.
  2. All information detailing how to enter this competition forms part of these terms and conditions. It is a condition of entry that all rules are accepted as final and that the competitor agrees to abide by these rules. The decision of the judges is final and no correspondence will be entered into. Submission of an entry will be taken to mean acceptance of these terms and conditions.
  3. Online entries should be uploaded to www.treasureforever.org.uk. Entries should be no more than 100 words, describing why the object is special to the Entrant, telling any story relating to it, and accompanied by a photograph of the ‘treasure’ object itself. Image files should be a minimum of 1MB and a of maximum 5MB in size and uploaded as a compressed jpeg file.
  4. Postal entries should be sent to: Treasure Forever Competition, National Trust, Heelis, Swindon, Wiltshire SN2 2NA. Entries should be no more than 100 words, describing why the object is personally meaningful and significant to the Entrant, telling any story relating to it, and accompanied by a photograph of the ‘treasure’ object itself. The National Trust may choose to publish the entry and photograph to the Treasure Forever website at any time or not at all. The National Trust regrets that photographs sent by post cannot be returned. Please do not send the National Trust any objects or additional items other than the entry itself.
  5. Entries without an accompanying photograph of the object will be accepted. In this instance, the Entrant accepts that a graphic representation of their object will be automatically assigned to their entry and that for technical reasons, the positioning of the entry on the website will be affected. All Entrants must supply their name, county/country of residence and contact details.
  6. All entries must be received by midnight on Sunday 1st November 2009. Late, incomplete or corrupt entries will not be accepted.
  7. The competition is open to users of any age. All Entrants under the age of 16 must obtain the consent of a parent or guardian prior to submitting any images. All images submitted must be the work of the individual submitting them and must not have been published elsewhere or have won a prize in any other competition. It is the responsibility of each entrant to ensure that any images they submit have been taken with the consent of anyone who is identifiable in that image or the consent of their parent/guardian if they are under 16 and that they have been advised of the purpose of the submission and that their photograph may be published by the National Trust, and that they do not infringe the copyright of any third party or any laws. Entrants must warrant that the photographs they are submitting are their own work and that they own the copyright for them.
  8. Entrants will retain copyright and moral rights in their submitted images however, by entering, all entrants grant the National Trust limited, non-exclusive rights to use the images to promote the competition the images were submitted to, or for similar future competitions within a five year period of the winners being announced for the competition that the images concerned were submitted to. In each case the photographer will always be credited whenever the image is used and published by the National Trust.
  9. The winning entries will be judged to be the most evocative, interesting, poignant or extraordinary examples of a person/s personal heritage. An initial short-listing process will identify the entries that meet this criteria and/or have the highest numbers of public votes. Thirteen winners will be selected from the shortlist by a national judging panel. One winning object and accompanying story will be displayed in each of the following regions and countries: Devon, Cornwall, East Midlands, Northern Ireland, Thames & Solent, Wessex, West Midlands, East of England, Wales, North West England, South East England, Yorkshire, North East England.
  10. Winners will be notified by email by 28th November 2009. All reasonable endeavours will be made to contact the winners at this time. If a winner cannot be contacted or is not available, the judges reserve the right to select another winner from the eligible entries which were received before the closing date.
  11. The winners will be contacted to arrange the physical transportation of their object to a National Trust property in or near to the geographical region of their address, as supplied with their entry. Loan of the item will be required from a date to be confirmed in December 2009 for the purposes of professional photography. The cost of carriage both to and from the nominated National Trust property for the object only will be covered by the National Trust. All prizes are non-transferable and there are no cash alternatives.
  12. Winning objects will be loaned to the nominated National Trust property for public display from a date to be confirmed in March 2010 for a period of approximately 6 months. Whilst trained curatorial staff will take every care to protect the safety of the object, owners are advised to ensure that the object is covered in their home contents insurance policy. The National Trust will not provide any additional insurance cover for the object.
  13. Winners may be required to take part in any competition publicity. Winner’s names and county/country will be published on the Treasure Forever Trust website and any other National Trust external communications such as press releases and exhibitions. It may also be published by the competition media partners BBC Homes & Antiques Magazine and any other press or media party giving coverage of the Treasure Forever campaign.
  14. Events may occur that render the competition itself or the awarding of the prizes impossible due to reasons beyond the control of the promoter and accordingly the promoter may at its absolute discretion vary or amend the promotion and the entrant agrees that no liability shall attach to the promoter as a result thereof.
  15. English law applies and the exclusive jurisdiction of the English Courts shall prevail.

This is the official National Trust Treasure Forever website. By using or registering with this site, you agree to abide by these terms of use, the privacy policy and any other guidelines published on this site from time to time. Site users are also governed by this website's terms and conditions.

While we welcome your participation with interactive features on this site, we will be moderating any posts or content that you choose to upload, submit or publish to this site. Due to the nature of our organisation we will be reactively moderating all posts, and content uploaded to this site. This means that once your content has been published, if another user reports your content as not in accordance with these terms of use, we can remove any of your content without further notice to you.

  • Your contributions must be civil, polite and tasteful. This creates an enjoyable space for all users.
  • No disruptive, offensive or abusive behaviour, unlawful or objectionable content. This includes any material which might be defamatory, offensive, infringing, obscene, lewd, pornographic, violent, abusive, insulting, threatening, harassing, discriminatory, blasphemous, indecent or otherwise unlawful or objectionable. It also includes any material which is aggressive, argumentative or likely to be construed as bullying.
  • No spamming or repetition. Please don't contribute off-topic material in subject-specific threads or areas.
  • No advertising, marketing or other commercial messages or content.
  • No impersonation of other users or public figures.
  • No inappropriate user names. This includes anything vulgar or offensive.
  • You may not refer to other websites, or post urls (website addresses).
  • You may not use multiple logins.
  • Please respect that users of all ages, backgrounds and abilities may be taking part in the competition. We want to create a space that people of all ages and abilities can enjoy using.
  • Use plain English and not slang in your posts. Use language that everyone can understand.
  • No personal information or contact details (e.g. phone numbers, email addresses, or postal addresses) are to be published on this site.
  • We do not tolerate plagiarism. If you do submit any content that is not your own, you will acknowledge that you have breached this agreement.

The views expressed in any user published comments or content are those of members of the public and are not necessarily those of the National Trust.

If you breach these rules, you will be sent an email informing you why your contribution was reported as inappropriate and has been edited or removed. This email may include a warning that continuing to break the rules may result in action being taken against your account.

If the breach is serious or persistent, we may suspend or block your account without warning.

The National Trust reserves the right to delete any contribution, or take action against any account, at any time, for any reason.

When you vote for an entry on our site we may automatically log your IP address, a unique identifier for your computer or other access device. We will not use your IP address to identify you in any way.

To ensure fair voting, we are restricting each user and IP address to one vote only.
